This trip offers an experience unrivaled by many offerings. The journey starts as you enter the Allpahuayo Mishana Natural Reserve, a reserve less than 20 years old. You'll walk through the reserve’s rare white-sand forests; the amazingly diverse habitats here house six bird species discovered only in the last ten years. You’ll note that each habitat you pass through is home to unique plants and birds.

You then board a boat in Iquitos and travel down the mighty Amazon for several hours. We’ll stop at an island that provides habitat for a host of birds. Then it’s on to Explorama Lodge, where you'll spend one night. You'll step back in time, without any electricity, but there are flush toilets and showers. In the afternoon, you’ll step into an Amazon rainforest. On the Varzea Trail, we’ll bird, hoping to spot the newly described Varzea Thrush.

The next morning, you hop on a boat for the trip to the confluence of the Napo River. The immense size of the Amazon takes your breath away. As the Napo and Amazon merge, we spot Amazonian pink river dolphins. For the next six days, we’ll stay in the Napo River and A.C.T.S (Amazonian Conservatory of Tropical Studies.)

In the early morning hours, you’ll climb the stairs to reach the canopy walkway, originally built with the assistance of the Smithsonian Institute. The jungle comes to life, and you may spot Macaws flying on top of the canopy. Mixed flocks of birds occasionally appear, and the birding is frenetic; we may see over 50 species in one flock.

You’ll also hike rainforest trails, hoping to add two tamarin species and several species of monkey, along with as many as 350 species of birds. You’re walking through a forest with a greater large tree diversity than any other place on Earth.

On day 12, you boat back out to Iquitos, where you’ll spend one last night in Peru. Flights leave in the evening the next day, so you'll head back to Allpahuayo Reserve, knowing precisely which bird targets we need.
